I've decided I'm gonna compose something for an orchestra - no idea what yet though...however I'm not entirely sure of every instrument in an orchestra, what has 1sts and 2nds and stuff (like violins) or the ranges of each instrument. Pouvez-vous aider? Ta!

If you need any help with a harmony..i can help with any second violin or viola parts, although being a second violinist it is nice to sometimes have the tune if possible.
Have you also considered using something like FinaleNotepad or Sibelius? They're really good at handling scores and making individual parts. But you need a good soundcard to hear every "voice" though.

Yeah and clarinets always have really boring parts! Give the w/w something exciting!
And don't write any of the clarinet stuff so that when it's transposed it's got 4 sharps/flats or more. It gets a pain in the backside to play!

Chimpyang: It's 3 - it may be a while before it's 'done' but I'm sure it'll need some serious refining! izzy: I was considering E Major, just to pi$$ off stupid transposing instruments...C# major for the Eb instruments, F# major for the Bb instruments and B major for the G instruments...maybe not, eh? And the woodwinds'll have a decent part, I promise - as will second violin...

Well, soon as you hit on a good melody we can suggest some harmonising parts, problem is getting the great and unforgettable melody.

In practical terms what's the highest note on a violin?

umm if you want it to sound nice you should only go up to G 4 ledger lines above the stave but it can go higher-the highest i've played is D above that but that's only in scales and it doesn't sound nice!

Depends on the skill of the orchestra who plays it......i'd say you can stretch to a D...

F# maj! absolute hell! That's like alternate fingerings for the alternative fingerings!
I feel for whoever plays it!

Nah...it'll be a mid-flat key signature - F minor's my current choice, though it may change...G minor for clarinets, not too bad, eh?
