Okay, to be random, how good are you at noticing whether a note is out of tune?

Being a bassoonist et al, tuning is a huge problem. Even over the last five months or so my tuning ability has skyrocketed. For the most part I can tell if someone is playing out of tune...even with this though I still manage to sound off...

I don't play any instruments where you have to tune regularly but I don't usually notice if somebody's instrument is out of tune anyway!

In reference to the violins, nearly all instrumnets have only one way of being out of tune - guitars have frets go your fingers are always in tune; woodwinds can adjust embouchure or some such to fix the pitch; but a violin (or viola, if you will...) can have out of tune strings, the fingers in teh wrong place AND the bow can alter the pitch. I think it is remarkable that any violin/viola players can even come close to the correct pitch - but I haven't met any violins (even G8 virtuoso's) who are always spot on.

i have perfect pitch so i notice when things are out of tune and it's really annoying sometimes! Ahh, but is it perfect perfect pitch? Can you confidently: a) recognise a tone b) tune something c) hum a tone on demand d) identify both pitch and type of chord e) identify a key signature ...without an outside reference?

hmm...I do a bit. I can do the top three, and a bit of the fourth...though it seems to improve daily, so maybe in a month's time I'll be able to do all five...
