do you think distinctions in exams are got by people who are just simply naturally gifted at music? ive never got a distinction in a practical exam and dont consider myself to be that good at music. is it possible for say someone like me to work really hard and get a distinction, or will it just never happen does any of that make sense?!

Like all things, a natural affinity for something will always help - but someone who works like crazy and someone else who has a talent may well get very similar marks. So that begs the question - how well would a talented musician do if they also worked like crazy?

A distinction are for excellent performances. Don't worry because merits (and maybe passes) are very good anyway!

It depends, you may have the ability to get a distinction but mess up in the exam because of nerves, so you don't end up getting one. I would be interested to see what standard I am at ABRSM now, as I got a merit for Grade 5 ABRSM, and then did 6+7 on Guildhall.

I'm not sure, because you can be a talented musician, but not react well to exams...

Well, I tend to react more negatively, I also think a person can be very talented but if they don't have the right teacher, it might not come out.

Well, everyone should have a good teacher. If he/she is not a good teacher, the student should get a new teacher!

You may even have the best teacher you could wish for but think they're an idiot anyway. Personally I think my b'oon teacher's great - he's picky but he has a laugh as well...

My flute teacher is great, she is an amazing flautist (tours Europe), but is also kind and fair and has helped me improve a lot.
