Yes I have. Not the easiest to do during a piece, hugging your ear to them tapping gently and adjusting the foot pedal with only one pair of hands, particularly during a modulation in the piece being played, not trusting to the note guide on the timps, big finish coming up...BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOMBOOOOOOMMMMMMM! Imagine if it was just out of tune... Well who needs it anyway.

You'd need a good pair of ears to tune timp during a performance. Much rather use flute&b'oon's computer controlled tuning...

our timps are nearly always out of tune in orchestra! and half the time, the violin tutor plays them which makes it sound even weirder!

I had to play timpani once in a christmas carol service.(didn't particulary want to!) I couldn't tune them coz i couldn't tell the difference between them! My teacher had to do them, and even he struggled! And the organ is a semitone flat, so we had to keep tuning them differently if we were at school!

I am not allowed near the percussion so I haven't tried tuning a Timpani yet. I would like to try...one day...

Playing the drum kit (one handed!) when I had a bad wrist was quite fun. It was quite weird having to read 3 lines at once, and work out rhythms!
I hated playing the timpani- 30 bars rest and then 2 rolls! Then another 30 bars rest......

especially when you loose count and miss it! I think my teacher had to count me in for each one, coz I stopped paying attention!
Reading 3 lines wasn't too bad, because it would do something, then repeat it for years, then change but only slightly.
