Ever heard of desefinado? What about the indian characterisic of using multi tones. This has been widely ignored in western music, and who can get their ear around the unusual pitch? How about adding this into the equation of recognising the note in perfect pitch discussion. Interested to hear your views and what is taught in the music class these days. Jazzking.

- No, I've never heard of desefinado... - I think western music ignores multi-tones to make things simpler. Also, if a singer wanted a job, and sung a whole bunch of multi-tones in their submission, they'd simply be ignored and told to shove their music elsewhere UNLESS they were the 'right' multi-tones, in which case they'd simply say 'Very nice but not what the public want'. For those of you who don't know what multi-tones are: You know in Indian music where the singer sungs a note, then goes slightly sharp and flat and...'vibrato's, for a lack of a better word between the two. - Also: did you know that up to 87% of today's top performers have some degree of perfect pitch? If a performer with perfect pitch started to use multi-tones then they'd start to think 'Do I need singing lessons?' (which most of them do, to be honest...) - And I expect someon with perfect pitch could probably pick out a multi-tone as a 'sharp/flat-__'

Good answers people. Desifinado or slightly out of tune by Thelonius Monk. Good one to listen to for those interested in inter harmonic variations.

Try listening to the middle section towards the end of the Badia boogie woogie waltz melody for a great example of multitone use. This covers secral older threads on the forum. By Joe Zawinul. It's an oldish 80s piece, but a good example nonetheless.
