number each scale 1-5 (doesn't have to be 5, just do whatever suits you). Do the number 1s first, 2s on the next day, 3s on the next day etc

Warm up absolutely every session with, for grade 8, four major + four minor scales (harm & mel.) making sure at least one of them is horrible (4#/4b at least). You'll learn them in no time

my teacher says to choose about 3 per week + their arpeggios n the like ... then practise for a week. next week move on to a new set of scales etc ... then move on the week after also. Then once you've gone through them all you start it all again and by the fourth time you shoudl be sorted ... it worked for me ... I got a distinction for my Grade8 viola

I played all the scales and arpegios I needed in the 10 mins free I had before school every morning. To start of with, I wouldn't manage to get them all in the 10 mins, like if I messed them up, but as I got better, I could do them all in about 8 mins. That worked, and I felt under pressure, coz I set a target time for me to do it every day, and if I failed, I felt really let down!
Sad isn't it?!

The way I do it is set myself a certain amount to do each day, then I give myself a mark out of 10 for each scale - starting at 10, and taking off a point for every wrong note, and taking off 2 for every time I start again. If i get less than 8 out of 10, I do it again the next day.

that's a v good idea! to be honest i don't tend to practice some scales (c/f/g major, a/e/d minor) but i'm gonna have to steal that idea!

Maybe I can use that idea as well, but I start again all the time when I play scales!

My teacher made me make a 'Scale Pot'! You write all the scales on separate pieces of paper, fold them up and put them in A Pot (you can colour co-ordinate major/ minor etc if you're feeling studious! ). Then you have to pick one out and play it until you can do it perfectly, when this happens you remove it from The Pot. You have to try and empty the pot every day! I think it works for me, because If I can't see which scale I'm picking out, I can't cheat and just practice the easy ones! ;D Also, It stops you playing them in the same order everyday and only learning the first page!

Try...All keys, legato on one day and then on the next all staccato. Totally boring, but well.

in grade 7 i did those 'Scale Pots', but you get really annoying scales like chromatic scales often. I did around 25 each day. If you do those make sure you don't put it back in the pot until you finish all the scales.
