YES! All the time...what happens with me is that I start to play a piece, but I never get past the first bar. And after struggling through the first bar, the second bar is too difficult...it's almost as if my brain doesn't want me to learn to play the piece! Some pieces simply don't 'click' in my head and they require masses of practice to produce an average performance.

A remedy I find is to go find a piece that you know (ie a chart song, theme tune to something etc.) and have a stab at that. Usually tihs boosts my morale, because you know you're playing it right and everyone else knows it...I personally like the pink panther theme - sounds pretty good on bassoon, actually.

Hi musicbabe No easy answer. It's a tedious, brain numbing chore, but it will all come good. I think that 1 out of 100 people practise enough and then of those take another 1000 and 1 of those will have the talent to excel in their chosen instrument. Mediocre players are abundant, but if you have the mental strength to break the tedium barrier... Get angry, scream, have a ten minute break, get fresh air cos all that playing and concentrating takes it out of you. Drink plenty of water too. Jazzking.

Keep trying, but don't play the same piece for too long!

this is happening to me on the violin. my teacher calls it the wall. he says it feels like my playing isn't improving and sometimes even getting worse but after a while i'll suddenly get better again as long as i keep trying.

sometimes usually 3-5 months before an exam (which is now for me) things don't always go right but get better when its even closer to the exam!

Yes, I've just been through a period of about a month where I came back off a high from my Grade 7 result, and then I just got so not motivated. But going back to band has helped me so much, it has shown me how much I love playing again
