My teacher gave me this advice: "always end a perfect cadence to give it a finished feel"
Now could you play the V down to the I (G-C) or should you go up to the I. So in treble clef, if you arte playing the 2nd line G would you go up to the middle space C or down to middle C??
That SHOULD make sense

i wsould usually use the leading note (B) as the second to last note, its still in the chord of G major so its ok. generally B to C gives a more finished feel than G-C even though its the same chord

As far as direction is concerned, it shouldn't matter, though I like to go up...

They don't give you enough freedom in bar space...

They don't give you enough freedom in bar space... i find that if im on a roll I have to be careful on what i put in as it could last ages... Do people find composing voice a lot harder?

I don't know, I just give it a nice perfect cadence to finish with.

also if you want use ii-V7-I - you might be marked up as this is a perfect cadence with all the trimmings

Well play it out...if it sounds finished it soudns finsished despite it not being a perfect one. The aim to to carry a message to the listener and less to make theoretical sense!

spot on. also, if you're worried about bar space, slow it down to largo and halve the rhythms, so essentially you're getting twice the space!

Leave them wanting more! Use an unfinished cadence, they will all be confused, need to pee, and not be able to sleep for at least a week!

that's rather cruel jazzking! i've just been doing my gcse composition and i have the opposite problem-it sounds finished too often, then it goes on and sounds confusing. can anyone think of any interesting sounding cadences i could use instead?
