Does anyone have any tips for this? I have mine at the end of April, and our teacher is really bad. We have only done 1 terminal task, and that was for the mock, and she hasn't even given us it back yet (and that was in November). I am planning to use the rhythm stimulus, so I need tips, thanks!

Hey Nicki, this was ages ago - but how did you manage to go about this in the end? I do OCR too, and I would have to do my terminal task at the end of this year. And our teacher have only been through it with us for our Year 10 exams so far!

Oooh hello! I am sure I recognise your signature from the ABRSM forums! Well, our preparation for the terminal task was little, but I do have a few hints. Firstly, our teacher taught us to always to it in this form (you don't have to at all): Section A Section A1 (slight variation of A) Section B Repeat of Section A. I got an A* for Music, so the terminal task must have been ok. Also, when you do it, take your instrument with you,it helps a lot. If you can, buy CPG Areas of Study book for OCR Music, it is a very good revision guide with lots of tips and help and of course all the topics. It has a section on the terminal task. Feel free to PM me either on here or ABRSM for any help and I wish you all the best Edit - I did the rhythm stimulus. I wouldn't chose the pitch stimulus at all.

Thanks for the advice Nicki. How many bars were each of your sections? When I did it for my Year 10 exam, I did ABA, 16 bars each, though that was quite difficult. And how do you divide your time, like how long did you spend devising the rhythm, the melody, etc? Also, did you write down your melody on a stave, or did you memorise it, or did it another way? (I'm always full of questions!) I always choose the rhythm stimulus too, it just seems so much easier... Yup, I'm a member at ABRSM too. I'm anakrron on there.

Ours were only 4 bars long (each section), so altogether our piece would be 16 bars long. With the rhythm stimulus, I just got my flute and tried to think of a melody. I generally started in C major, modulated to G major and then modulated back to C major, so C was usually my first and end note. I didn't divise my time at all, but I found I finished with plenty of time to spare. I wrote mine down on a stave, you cannot memorise it as you do not know what the stimulus will be like for the exam.

i'm meant to be doing one of these soon but as my teacher's not on the planet, could someone explain what the rhythm/pitch stimuluses (yep i know that's not a word!) are?

You get given a rhythm and a pitch and a set of chords. These are called stimuli. You have to choose one of them to base your composition on
