Gilbert and sullivan I can just about cope with, but Shostakovitch is depressing! Didn't he try and kill himself, and write a movement as his death movement?!
I don't like depressing stuff! It doesn't do anything for me!

Its not all depressing! Have you heard any of his jazz suites? Or the Gadfly suite? They are great!

I'd forgotten about the Gladyfly, and I didn't know he'd written a jazz suite, so I will "eat some of my words"!!!! Not all of them, I agree with Nat on the string quartet though, that was horrible! (and depressing!) And I don't care if he managed to use his signature in most pieces, he should've got psychiatric help!

Shostkovich is def the century's greatest composer. He didn't actually kill himself after the eighth string quartet, he just thought it was likely that it might happen what with the repressive communist regime in russia. His best symphony is the 13th- the choral symphony "babi yar".

Yeah I had another thought about the killing himself thing, and thought maybe I'd got confused with Messiaen (sp?!), but he wrote the last year's A-level set work in a POW camp. Dunno where I got the killing himself thing from!
I hate Bach to listen to, and I used to hate playing it, but I'm playing a thing by him now, and I actually quite like it!
