when someone takes an exam and then thinks that they're actually that standard even though they may not be! for example, a girl in orchestra who plays the flute did grades 1,5 and 7 in a few years and thinks she's brilliant and grade 7 standard but she's grade 5 at best i'd say! It's really bad in school, all the music teachers teach the pupils 3 pieces and some scales just so they can get through the exams so they can do as many exams as possible! Wow....long post! but this is one of the things that really annoys me

actually, I'm afraid I fall foul of this...to be honest I don't regard myself as very good - I haven't had much experience either - but I'm taking my GV. I'd probably say I'm ~GIII at best, maybe GIV...however I don't go around saying I'm GV, I say I'm shi...oops. I say I'm not very good...

Even though I have taken Grade 7, I don't think I am good. I listened to this girl who is in the band I am auditioning for, and my teacher was like, she is only Grade 7, but she ws bloomin' amazing!

I'd say it shouldn't just reflect the grade you took in the exam, but also how good you are with playing in general, and maybe the mark you got for that exam.

Well, yes it does annoy me, but most people (i hope) realise that theres is more to music than grades, and also that playing 3 pieces well does not necessarily say you are that standard, there are other things to consider as well. Musicality of playing for example.
