As a bassoonist, if someone where to hand me a contrabassooon or a tenoroon, I'd be able to play it. Is this the same for everyone else - for example, could an alto saxophonist play the other three aswell? Oboe/oboe d'amore/cor anglais? And could a violinist play a viola, with a bit of adjustment of where they put their fingers?

on a violin the strings are G D A E and on a viola they're C G D A so it's quite different. and viola is treble clef and viola is alto clef. but i managed to pick up the viola in abouta week so it's not that difficult. (no heaviness jokes please )

I think it is teh same Saxophone- smae fingerings but you would have to transpose Recorder- SAme as saxophone (but some have the same eg. bass and descant)

I play clarinet and I could play other types of clarinet. I haven't tried though.
I took up flute after clarinet and once I got over being dizzy (!) I was ok.
I can play sax aswell.
It would be harder for a flautist or a sax player to pick up each others instruments, because the flute player would have to get used to a reed. Don't know what it would be like for a sax player to try a flute, probably the same for me trying a flute!
A sax or flute player wouldn't be able to play clarinet straight off coz there's a whole bunch of new fingerings to learn.

oboe and cor anglais are the same fingering, it's just the music thats transposed cos the cor is a 5th lower than the oboe
dunno about oboe d'amore...haven't played one

I was quite upset...then I squeaked by b'oon reed and I felt better!

It's not quite so easy to swap between brass instruments. It's all to do with embouchure (the shape of your lips). People with big lips are condemned to the oom-pah of the bass instruments, whilst those with thin lips get the melodious lead parts of the trumpet et al. (Bitter and twisted? Me? Never!)

interesting question... For some instruments the size may be something you need to adjust to (and a bit of fingering)

Flute players could switch between the piccolo, alto and bass quite easily, once you got used to the slightly different embouchures but they would find it harder to switch to another wind instrument. If they did that might ruin their flute embouchure.

If they did that might ruin their flute embouchure. I can switch between bassoon to flute but not flute to bassoon for some reason, maybe embrouchure. I find that the bassoon embrouchure is effected more than flute... No one has mention piano/harpischord yet
