Hello everyone! ;D I was just thinking about this yesterday and wondered if anyone has any tips. I get really nervous about performances and auditions etc. It used to be so bad I would actually be sick before I went in the room, that doesn't seem to happen any more but I still get VERY nervous. Maybe its stopped because I've got more experience now? Dont know. Does anyone else suffer from nerves? And if so, how do you cope with them?

well there's the whole imagining the examiner/audience naked thing but i'm not sure how well that would work.
i just try to forget there are people listening to me.

I get really nervous before exams/auditions. I don't cope thjat well, but I am getting better. Usually, if I run around screaming for a bit instead of sitting down thinking, it helps.

I'll keep that in mind, naked examiners and running around screaming, hey, I could link the two together!
It does seem to get easier the more experience you get at performing. Maybe practice really does make perfect!

I don't know why, but for some reason now I am quite calm about performances. I used to be terrible - if I knew why I'd tell you!

i find when i think "oh no i've got this performance and it'll go badly cos i'll be nervous" it goes really badly but if i think "i won't get too nervous" i don't.

in my grade 7 exam i didn't think I'll be doing that well so i was really calm. but i was really determined to do better in grade 8 so i was really nervous and screwed up.

i hate it when reverse psychology works on yourself! but i guess that thinking 'oh well, it's not the end of the world' is a pretty good way to stop nerves.
another thing my teacher has said is: "you know you're going to get nervous. so prepare for it. nerves won't suprise you, so, if they come along, think OK, I'm nervous...and then get on with it. simple!"
yeah, simple...

i always find being a little bit nervous is good though, i don't know why. when i was ina competition, i wasn't nervous at all and i really messed it up when i could've played better than a lot of the people there.

oh yeah, he said something about that too: adrenaline is your friend, so use it to make it (the bassoon) sound better - and don't waste it on shaking or being embarassed

playing in front of a few other people beforehand also helps.

yes i know a few teachers who organise mini concerts for all their pupils every so often to give them practice at performing. i think it's a good idea.

I have a feeling I will be really nervous in my next performance at school later on. (I tend to get more nervous as I get older...)
