They're not much fun and they can get a bit irritating but they help alot if you can play them all. If you look at alot of pieces they are basically made up of scales going up or down or arpeggios - except for serialism - so by knowing your scales and arpeggios playing becomes easier.

thats true. a lot of music is made up of scales and arpeggios. so knowing them and being able to play them fluently is a good thing!

My A3 piece for grade 8 (Scarlatti) uses a lot of them - mainly based around D Major

According to our head of music, me and Kate should be practising for 2 hours a day per instrument! Yeah right! Find me 2 hours where I'm not eating, sleeping, at school/doping school work and I'll do it!
I've also never had a practise schedule, like 30 mins this, 20 mins that, I just play and practise what I think's necessary! I'm organised, but I don't think I could do practise like that, I wouldn't see myself progressing. It would become more like a chore than enjoyment, and that's not what I want it to end up being!
It does help to know your scales, for especially sight reading in band!

2 hours per day per instrument. even for someone like me that is a bit excessive! that would mean 2 hrs each for sax, clarinet and piano .6 hrs. where is the time for that lol
although i can do up to 5 hrs sax on a weekday. practising it is so addictive!!

I couldn't practise for 2 hours anyway! I'd loose my lip! I can play 3 hours at band, but it's not the same as doing practise by yourself.
I'm only in on Tuesdays, Fridays and weekends, so yeah more practise on a weekend. But I do have A-levels!

I hardly have enough time to do 1 1/2 hours for piano on weekdays!

weekdays are slightly different i guess. it does depend on what other commitements you have. if i had to choose which instrument to practice when i had not as much time id do sax. but if im free at weekends i can prac all day long!!

Melodic minor...play a major on the way up, with a b3, and a minor on the way down. I find harmonic minor more of a prob...
