NOTE: if you practise for 2 hours for example, vote '2 to 3 hours' instead of '1.5 to 2 hours'

My system is that you should practice for 1/2 the number of hours as the grade - for example, a grade 5 person should practice for 2 1/2 hours per day, grade 2 practices for 1 hour a day...on that principle I voted 4 hours

That seems like a lot of practice! I praticed: Grade 1= 20mins Grade 2= 30mins Grade 3= 30mins Grade 4= 30mins Grade 5= 45mins Grade 6= 1 hour Grade 7= 1 hour Grade 8= 1 hour (slightly more on weekends)
However, closer to the exam I always practice more!

OK, maybe that was a little much...maybe a better method would be: Grade 1 = 1 hour per week; Grade 2 = 2 hours per week; etc.

although I think that 2 hours is common by grade 8 standard...

it probably is but it does depend on eacj individual person and also what other commitments they have.
e.g. i might not get to practise on 1/2 days in the week so ill do about 5/6 hrs on the weekend
plus its not how much time you spend, but its how you spend the time!!

but I spend 20 minutes on technical, 30 on pieces and 10 minutes on sightreading!

if that works for you then great! everyone is different in their styles of learning and how much time they need to spend etc

Scales are easy - for me, at least - so in my opinion if someone doesn't pass their scales & appegios part of the exam then they deserve to have their instrument shoved...somewhere...poor tuba players...especially poor piano players...
